Make A Difference Day

A Saturday in October is designated Make A Difference Day throughout the United States and sponsored by USA News. It is a day when millions of Americans join hands to volunteer to address a need in our own neighborhood.
Altrusa International has designated this as a day when all Altrusa Clubs participate in addressing literacy needs in their local community.

Fox Valley has participated since 2002 when our first project was gathering books for the Two Rivers Head Start program and providing beverages for Lazarus House. Other projects have included recycling newspapers for the Big Rock Library handicapped access fund, purchasing bi-lingual books for Dominican Literacy Center, organizing a shower for Lifespring’s kitchen, and reorganizing the library at Lifespring.

It’s a good feeling to realize that you are only one of thousands of people who are volunteering in their community on the same day to make a difference.

MADD 2017 Mutual Ground

Our 2017 / 2018 MADD project took the form of support for Mutual Ground with the presentation of twenty-five Walmart gift cards, each in the amount of $10.00.  Given the many needs of the organization and the clients that it serves, we felt that this contribution would allow the organization to either purchase needed items or to give the cards directly to clients for their needs.

MADD Conversation Cafe 2015

Waubonsee Community College hosted this year's Conversation Cafe on Make A Difference Day, October 24th, 2015.

Altrusans Judy Reuter, Elaine Wolf, Sharee Clough and Cathy Rady participated by leading conversation groups and assisting with the book table and children's program.  Our Altrusa club donated the books that were given to the adult participants.

This event gives participants a chance to improve their conversational skills in English, and also to share their experiences about life in a new country.  Among other things we learned that elsewhere the pace of life is much calmer and less hectic than here, that the food of other countries is cooked slowly and has deeper flavors, that in Cameroon the secondary language is French, not English.  Newcomers see that our autumn colors are amazing, and that winter weather is not something they enjoy.  Some attendees hadn't previously had the experience of receiving a raffle ticket and having an opportunity to win one of the door prizes.  It was great to see how much fun and excitement this was for them.

Make a Difference Day - 2013

This was the fourth year we participated in the Conversation Café with Waubonsee Community College on October 19. This event is for new speakers of English to practice with others for whom English is a second language. Altrusans sit at a table with students and initiate and participate in the conversations. The Conversation Cafe is sponsored by the Adult Literacy Project, Aurora Public Library, Oswego Public Library District, the city of Aurora, and Altrusa International of Fox Valley in honor of Make a Difference Day.

Altrusa Fox Valley provided about 75 books for 110 adults and 51 children attending, and club members joined in the conversations among adults for whom English is a second language.  Attendees appreciate the books and the opportunity to speak English!
Our club's MADD project for 2017 was the presentation of a "Giving Hands Tree" to Mutual Ground
2015 - Sharee Clough hosts a table and leads her group in conversation
Conversation Cafe 2013 - Bonni Ellis, Service Committee Chair, coordinated this event and hosted a conversation table.
Attendees choose books donated by Altrusa for their children or themselves.
